ABOUT YAYASAN PETA BENCANA [DISASTER MAP FOUNDATION]
Founded in 2017, Yayasan Peta Bencana has been at the forefront of developing and maintaining open-source software for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. Over the years, Yayasan Peta Bencana has collaborated with frontline communities, universities, government agencies, experts, activists, researchers, first responders, and humanitarian organizations to expand the development, implementation, and adoption of climate adaptation software.
As the coordinating body of one of the largest open source softwares for climate adaptation, now serving over 350 million people, Yayasan Peta Bencana brings together teams from Indonesia, the Philippines, India, and beyond to drive the continuous development and deployment of cutting-edge, community-powered disaster resilience strategies.
Our open source software powers the platforms:

Our mission:
Rooted in the spirit of gotong royong [mutual aid] we believe everyone can participate in disaster mitigation efforts. We aim to provide all residents with equal access to the most critical resource during disasters: open and verified information.
To raise awareness for the International Disaster Risk Reduction Day on 13 October 2022, Yayasan Peta Bencana’s Director Nashin Mahtani joined the Southeast Asia Today News team to explain exactly how Siti OSS works to enable and expand disaster risk reduction, response, and recovery in Indonesia, the Philippines, and beyond. Please share it widely.
ABOUT PETABENCANA.ID
PetaBencana.id [Disaster Map Indonesia] is a real-time disaster mapping platform for Indonesia. Since 2017, PetaBencana.id has been a vital resource for real-time disaster information sharing, enabling communities, first responders, and government agencies to coordinate responses and reduce risks. The system gathers, sorts, and displays real-time data directly from, and back to, people affected by various environmental changes. As the largest open-data disaster mapping platform of its kind, PetaBencana.id provides hyperlocal intelligence that enables better decision making for residents, emergency managers, first responders, and businesses.
Our AI-driven chatbot technology transforms social media into a real-time crisis coordination network: the system detects disaster-related posts on social media, automatically reaches out to affected individuals, and gathers information directly from people on-the-ground. Intentionally designed not to be a stand-alone app, this innovative method allows us to reach millions of people everyday by harnessing the use of already well-adopted social media channels. Crowd-sourced information via social media is verified in real-time, mapped, and made available via a mobile-centric website.
Data from PetaBencana.id is automatically integrated into the National Emergency Management Agency (BNPB) of Indonesia, and the BMKG. Improving decision-support for emergency managers through real-time situational intelligence.
By detecting, verifying, and categorizing disaster severity levels as they unfold, PetaBencana.id provides a robust overview of rapidly changing events. This ensures that communities and decision-makers receive timely, accurate, and actionable insights, saving lives and property. Since 2017, the platform has helped millions navigate climate risks, protect resources, and reduce economic losses.
Importantly, PetaBencana.id is not simply a technical system, but the software itself encodes a method for social engagement and transformation - driving a broader social movement for climate adaptation that includes our engagement processes, youth programs, and other programs for strategic partnerships and community building. The design and development of PetaBencana.id follows a sustained, collective, and multidisciplinary methodology of co-research involving the widest variety of stakeholders including disaster risk management agencies, government managers, first responders, scientific researchers, artists, activists, and resident groups.
We center the knowledge, capacities, and concerns of the most affected people as we collectively build tools that empower every resident to participate in disaster recovery and risk reduction, decentralize emergency response, and democratize decision support tools. By placing the power of data in the hands of communities, we believe that technology can be harnessed to encourage collective and proactive approaches to disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation.
