STORIES FROM THE GROUND
Behind every data point on PetaBencana.id is a real story—a family finding safety before floodwaters rise, a volunteer coordinating aid more effectively, a first responder reaching those in need faster. These actions don’t just help in the moment—they create ripple effects. Teachers report a significant decrease in school absences during extreme weather, as students and families can better prepare and respond to disasters. During the forest fires in Kalimantan, mothers expressed how the platform gave them a tangible way to protect their families, strengthening their role as women leaders in community resilience. Emergency managers highlight how PetaBencana.id has sped up evacuations and aid delivery, ensuring that help reaches those in need faster.
INDEPENDENT EVALUATION
In 2024, an independent evaluation, commissioned by USAID, examined the impact of PetaBencana.id (Disaster Map Indonesia) and MapaKalamidad.ph (Disaster Map Philippines), as well as the open-source infrastructure that powers them: Situational Intelligence OSS (Siti OSS) (formerly known as CogniCity Open Source Software).
The evaluation findings confirm that what began as a digital tool for disaster reporting has evolved into a civic movement—one that is reshaping how entire societies respond to risk, govern uncertainty, and adapt to the climate crisis.
By integrating real-time, crowdsourced data into national decision-making systems, the platforms have cut disaster response times from days to minutes, empowering both authorities and communities to act with confidence and precision. More profoundly, they have shifted disaster consciousness itself—from fear and helplessness toward collective vigilance, agency, and purposeful action.
What began as a reporting tool has evolved into a movement of civic intelligence—youth, women, and communities leading preparedness and recovery through shared information and mutual aid. Built with communities through a proven method of radical localization, these open-source platforms demonstrate a new model for ethical, participatory technology development that is globally adaptable, cost-effective, and locally owned.
PetaBencana.id and MapaKalamidad.ph are not merely technologies—they are infrastructures of solidarity, blueprints of civic power, and living laboratories of climate democracy.
